Melanie Hall went missing on 9th June 1996 after a night out with her boyfriend at a local nightclub.

She was declared legally dead in November 2004.

Her remains were discovered in October 2009.

Melanie Hall’s murder remains unsolved.

Her parents had previously offered a £50,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of her killer.

Disappearance of Melanie Hall

Melanie Hall disappeared after a night out at a local nightclub called Cadillacs nightclub.

She disappeared on the 8th/9th June 1996.

Hall was there with her boyfriend Philip Karlbaum and another couple they were friends with.

Melanie and Philip are believed to have had an argument after she danced with another man.

Melanie was last seen at the nightclub at around 1.10am.

Investigation 1996 -2008

Melanie Hall was reported missing on the 11th June.

She was reported as missing by her parents.

They reported her missing after they were told she had not turned up for work.

Philip Karlbaum spoke at a press conference about her disappearance.

On the same day, the police started searching the River Avon.

Shortly after, the police released an e-fit of the male below.

He was seen with a woman inside the nightclub, who could have been Melanie.

The man who she danced with inside the club has been interviewed.

He has since been ruled out of the investigation.

A month later, a reconstruction of the events surrounding her disappearance appeared on Crimewatch.

Two and a half years later, the police search the river again but nothing was found.

In 2003, a flat in Bath, a house in Inglesbatch and a field near Inglesbatch were searched.

Nothing was found in any of those locations.

A coroner recorded an open verdict on her death in November 2004.

They ruled it was likely she was unlawfully killed on the night of her disappearance.

Discovery of Remains

On the 5th October 2009, workmen were clearing an area at junction 14 on the M5 motorway.

They were preparing for works on the road at junction 14 on the M5 motorway.

They discovered a black bin liner that was wrapped in blue rope, commonly used on building sites.

The bag contained human bones, a ring and a skull.

Police were called and the bones taken away for identification.

The ring was shown to her parents, who confirmed it was hers.

A post mortem of the bones and a check of dental records revealed that they were Melanie Hall.

There was significant damage to the bones.

It suggested blunt force trauma to her skull and face.

The remains were discovered 25-30 miles from where she had been last seen.

The clothing, shoes and handbag she wore on the night of her disappearance have never been found.

Her handbag contained beauty products and a bank card.

She was also wearing a watch and silver earrings.

The investigation into her death was named Operation Denmark.

Evidence

The evidence that police have in this case is DNA evidence.

They also have the rope and the plastic bag her remains were discovered in.

The DNA evidence has created a partial profile but it has not yet been able to analysed.

Due to the advancements in DNA technology it is only a matter of time before scientists can create a full profile.

The rope used to wrap the black bag was a blue rope.

It was commonly used in the building trade and sold by builders merchants.

There were also three Ford car or van keys discovered close to the body.

They may be related to her death as they have been dated to 1996.

Arrests

Nine arrests have been made both before and after her remains were discovered.

None of those arrested have been formally charged with her killing.

In March 2003, two men were arrested and released on bail.

They were later released without charge in August 2003.

A 38 year old man was arrested and questioned for 22 hours.

He was released on bail in July 2010.

He was not charged for her murder.

A 45 year old man was arrested in November 2013.

There was not enough evidence to charge him.

Investigation 2009 – 2018

In 2013, a Volkswagen Golf that may have been involved was forensically examined.

Nothing was found that could be connected to her murder.

In 2013, Police revealed the rope had been analysed by forensic scientists.

They had a lead on where it had come from.

A property in Roundhill Park, Whiteway was searched in connection with an arrest made.

In 2o14, Police made an appeal to trace a white VW Golf GTi hardtop with registration plate C752 CYE.

The vehicle was last sold to a new owner on 11th December 1998.

It has been untaxed since June 2001 and was likely scrapped.

2019 10 Years Later

The investigation came back to the attention of the press as 10 years had passed since her remains were discovered.

Detective Chief Inspector James Riccio was leading the investigation.

He revealed that he believes there may be a killer and an accomplice, who dumped her body.

Riccio explained that the DNA evidence still needs further forensic work.

He says that they have a partial DNA profile.

With DNA advances he hopes soon it will reveal her killer.

2020/2023 Public Appeals

In 2020, a public appeal was made to anyone who may have been in the area.

It asked for people to think about that evening and get in touch with them.

A new potential sighting was revealed after the last confirmed sighting at 1.10am.

A witness saw a man and woman arguing close to the nightclub.

This was around 1.45 to 2.00am and have asked for anyone who saw this to get in touch.

The police also re-released the 1996 efit in the hopes that someone may recognise him.

To this date, more than 250 statements have been taken.

More than 2000 club goers and taxi drivers have been interviewed and 1200 leads have been investigated.

In 2023, another public appeal was launched.

This was due to a documentary due to be aired on Channel 5.

The documentary was called The Body In The Bag: The Murder Of Melanie Hall.

Suspects

A number of known criminals have been questioned in relation to the killing of Melanie Hall.

The case has also been linked in similarity to the crimes of Levi Bellfield and the disappearance of Suzy Lamplugh.

Police interviewed John Cannan in 1998, although he was in prison at the time.

They interviewed him about his cellmate Christopher Clark.

They also interviewed Mark Shillibier in December 2000 but were unable to link him to the crime.

There are similarities to the crimes committed by Christopher Halliwell.

He was a taxi driver and killed other women after they had been in nightclubs.
