Roy Whiting is a British murderer who abducted and killed Sarah Payne.
He was later found guilty of the murder of 8-year-old Sarah Payne in June 2000.
Sarah was killed as she played hide and seek with her siblings.
Whiting was given a life sentence for the crime.
He will have to serve a minimum of 40 years in prison for his crime.
Sarah Payne Abduction
On July 1st 2000, Roy Whiting abducted Sarah Payne in his van.
She was abducted from a country lane in Kingston Gorse.
Sarah had been out playing hide-and-seek with her brothers and sisters.
They were playing close to their grandparents’ home.
Her older brother saw Whiting driving away from the scene.
He did not know that he had abducted his sister.
Many press conferences were held appealing for information on her disappearance.
They featured both Sarah Payne’s mother, Sara Payne, and Sarah Payne’s dad, Michael Payne.
They plead with the abductor for the return of their daughter.
Sarah Payne Murder
The body of Sarah Payne was found on 17th July 2000, in a field near Pulborough.
She was found over 10 miles from where she was last seen.
Sarah was discovered naked in a shallow grave by a farm worker.
Due to decomposition, the autopsy was unable to conclusively find the cause of death.
The coroner believed it was likely that she was strangled or smothered to death.
They concluded that the death was likely violent.
Investigation
Whiting was questioned by officers as a matter of course.
He was a convicted sex offender and drove a white van.
Whiting had an alibi of being at a funfair in a nearby town.
Police did not believe him about his alibi.
They were also concerned about his lack of interest in Sarah’s being found safe.
Police found a shoe at the side of the road, which forensic testing proved to belong to Sarah.
Upon searching Whiting’s flat weeks before they discovered a receipt for fuel from a petrol station.
The petrol station was close to where the shoe was later found.
Arrest
Whiting was first arrested in early July before Sarah Payne’s body was discovered.
He was held for two days, but they were unable to find any hard evidence to link him to her.
This was after forensic scientists combed his flat for evidence.
On 21st July 2000, Roy Whiting stole a car and led police on a police chase.
He drove for miles,s going at over 70mph until he lost control of the vehicle.
He crashed into a parked car and was finally arrested.
In September 2020, he was charged with theft and dangerous driving.
Whiting was sentenced to 22 months in prison.
After the discovery of forensic evidence Police sought to charge Roy Whiting for the murder of Sarah Payne in February 2001.
The police had sought a search warrant for his van.
The back had been kitted out as a snatch van with cable ties, rope and a knife.
They had found red fibres in her hair that matched a red sweatshirt found in his van.
They also found one of her hairs in the van.
This led to the conclusion that he was the Sarah Payne killer.
Trial
Roy Whiting’s trial began on the 14th November 2001.
Roy Whiting denied the murder of Sarah Payne throughout his trial despite the forensic evidence.
Evidence was given by Sarah’s brother, Lee.
The majority of the witnesses were in the forensic science field.
Other witnesses were called who saw a vehicle matching the description of Whiting’s van close to her abduction site,e and where he left her body.
On 12th December 2001, Jurors found him guilty of being Sarah Payne’s killer.
He was given a life sentence for the crime.
Sentencing Appeals
In 2002, Home Secretary David Blunkett set the minimum term of his life sentence at 50 years.
He appealed against this ruling in June 2004, but his appeal was not heard until June 2010.
This appeal reduced the minimum term of his sentence to 40 years.
Roy Whiting will be eligible for release in 2041.
Prison Life
Roy Whiting fears attacks from other prisoners.
He is said to surround himself with fellow sex offenders for protection.
Despite being cautious, Whiting has been attacked on numerous occasions.
Whiting had his face slashed by Rickie Tregaskis, a fellow prisoner, in 2002.
He was stabbed in the eye in 2011 by Gary Vinter and was beaten with a flask in 2016.
Whiting was attacked in November 2018 by two inmates, Richard Prendergast and Kevin Hyden.
They stabbed him multiple times and left him to die.
Medics were quickly on the scene, and he survived the attack.
In February 2024, he was stabbed multiple times by Andrew Light, who attempted to murder him.
He is due in court in June 2025.
Previous Conviction
Roy Whiting was imprisoned in 1995 for four years.
He was imprisoned for the abduction and sexual assault of an 8-year-old girl.
Whiting was arrested after an acquaintance came forward to say Whiting had just sold a car.
The car matched the description of the abductor.
He was given a lesser sentence due to pleading guilty and sparing the victim from having to testify in a trial.
Experts disagreed about Whiting – one stated he was not a paedophile, and this was an isolated incident.
Another was convinced that he would re-offend and may kill his next victim.
Sarah’s Law
The Sarah Payne case led to the Child Sex Offenders Disclosure (CSOD) scheme.
This is commonly known as Sarah’s Law after a campaign led by Sara Payne, her mother.
